Start MP4 to GIF conversion at the moment that matters

Choose a local video and find the action you want to repeat. Enter its time in Start at; a value such as 0:03 starts three seconds into the recording. Set Length to keep the reaction or demonstration brief. The initial length is 5 seconds.

The selection stops at the end of the video even if you request more time. A start at or past the end cannot produce useful frames. For a longer excerpt that should stay a video, use the separate Video Trimmer.

Balance GIF width and motion against file size

The width choices are 320 px, 480 px, 640 px or 800 px, with 480 px selected initially. Height follows the source proportions. The frame-rate choices are 10 fps, 15 fps or 20 fps; the initial setting is 15 fps. More frames can make motion smoother, but also give the encoder more pictures to store.

For a heavy result, shorten the selected moment first, then try a narrower width or lower frame rate. Compare the reported size with the destination’s limit. There is no target-size box or guarantee that one setting will fit a particular attachment limit. If the destination accepts video, keeping an MP4 may be more practical.

Keep GIF gradients from turning into harsh color bands

GIF has a small color palette, so a sky or skin tone may lose subtle shades. Dithering mixes nearby colors into a pattern to soften that change. Dithering offers Steady (smaller file), Soft (closest color) or Off (flat graphics); the default is Steady (smaller file). A softer-looking result can contain more moving grain and take more space.

Under Colors, choose One set for the clip or New set each frame. The default, One set for the clip, helps a color stay consistent through the animation. A separate palette for each frame can suit a cut between very different scenes, but adds processing work. Inspect gradients, lettering and still areas before deciding which looks cleaner.

Set GIF repetition and plan for silent playback

The Loop forever control is enabled initially. Turn it off to write a GIF that plays once. This changes the file’s repeat instruction; it does not blend the last frame into the first. For a less abrupt loop, choose a moment whose beginning and end look similar.

The output contains pictures without an audio track. A spoken explanation, music cue or sound effect will not survive conversion. Keep the original video when the sound is part of the message, and check the finished GIF in the app where you intend to use it.

Read MOV and MP4 through the browser’s video decoder

The file picker lists MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV. Those names describe containers; the browser must also understand the video encoding inside each file. A MOV from one device may work while another does not. MP4 encoded with H.264 is the retry format suggested by the engine.

Use an up-to-date browser with video decoding support on your phone or computer. If a file fails, follow the error message, try a compatible export of the original, or use another current browser. Changing a filename extension does not change its encoding.

Convert personal recordings into GIFs on your device

The converter reads a file you select and builds the GIF inside the browser. Your recording is not uploaded for conversion. This is useful for an unpublished product walkthrough or a personal reaction clip. The GIF is assembled locally, but the animation converter still needs to load its code over the network.

Processing time depends on the device, selected duration, dimensions and color settings. There is no verified completion time or universal input-file size that works on every phone. If the tab struggles, try a shorter selection and smaller width, or move to a computer.

Improve the source clip before reducing it to GIF colors

Conversion selects existing frames and maps their colors into a GIF. It does not invent a scene, reconstruct a blurred face or create new motion. Start with a clear recording and choose enough width for the details that matter, especially small labels in a screen demonstration.
