What this video to GIF maker does

This tool turns a short stretch of a video into an animated GIF, entirely in your browser.

You choose four things:

- Start at — where the clip begins, typed as minutes and seconds, like 0:12 or 1:05.5. - Length — from 1 to 15 seconds. - Width — 320, 480, 640 or 800 pixels. Height follows the video’s shape, and the tool never enlarges past the video’s own width. - Frame rate — 10, 15 or 20 frames per second, in Advanced.

The browser’s own video decoder reads each frame at the exact time needed, the frames are scaled down smoothly, and a GIF encoder writes the animation. The result shows the file size, frame count and resolution, so you can tell straight away whether it is small enough for where you want to post it.

GIFs loop forever by default. Turn Loop forever off for one that plays once. Nothing is uploaded at any step.

How to convert an MP4 to a GIF

1. Choose your video. MP4 files work in every up-to-date browser. MOV, WebM and MKV work when your browser can decode the video inside them. 2. Find the moment. Note the time in your video player, then type it into Start at. Both 0:12 and 12 mean twelve seconds in. 3. Set the length. Short is better for GIFs. Three to six seconds covers most reactions and demos. 4. Pick a width. 480 px suits chats and web pages. 320 px keeps files small. 640 or 800 px suits a large screen or a documentation page. 5. Press Make GIF. Check the animation and its file size. 6. Adjust and repeat if it is too large. Lower the width first, then the frame rate, then the length. 7. Download the GIF.

If the start time is past the end of the video, the tool says so instead of making an empty file.

Getting smaller GIF files

GIF is from 1987 and compresses video poorly, so file size is the main thing to manage. Three settings decide almost all of it.

Width has the biggest effect. Halving the width cuts the number of pixels to a quarter, and the file shrinks roughly as much.

Frame rate comes next. 10 fps has half the frames of 20 fps. Talking, pointing and slow movement look fine at 10 fps; fast action looks smoother at 15 or 20.

Length is simple: a 3 second GIF is about half the size of a 6 second one.

The content matters too. A still camera with one moving subject compresses well, because the tool reuses every pixel that did not change since the last frame. A handheld shot, falling snow or fast camera moves change every pixel in every frame, so those GIFs are larger.

Many chat apps and forums cap uploads somewhere between 5 and 25 MB. The size shown under the result tells you which settings fit before you download.

Color quality: why GIFs band, and how this tool avoids it

A GIF can hold at most 256 colors per frame. A video frame can hold millions. Squeezing one into the other is where most GIF makers lose quality: smooth skies and skin break into visible stripes, called banding.

This tool uses three techniques to keep it clean:

- One color set for the whole clip. Colors are sampled from frames across your chosen stretch, so a color stays the same from frame to frame and flat areas do not flicker. - Dithering. Neighboring pixels alternate between close colors, so the eye sees a smooth blend. Steady uses a fixed fine pattern that does not crawl between frames and keeps files smaller. Soft spreads the difference more naturally and looks closest to the video on a still frame. Off suits flat graphics and screen recordings. - New set each frame, in Advanced, gives each frame its own 256 colors. It helps clips that cut between very different scenes, at the cost of speed and size.
