What this video trimmer does

This tool keeps the part of a video between two times and removes the rest. Type a Start and an End, press Trim video, and you get a new file with just that stretch.

For MP4 and MOV videos, the cut is lossless. The original compressed frames and sound are copied into the new file as they are. Nothing is re-encoded, so the quality is exactly the same as the original and the trim finishes in seconds, even for a long recording.

The new file starts at the frame you asked for, not a few frames early. The result shows the new length, the times it runs from and to, the file size and whether the clip is the original quality or re-encoded.

MP4 and MOV videos come out as MP4. WebM videos stay WebM. Everything happens in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.

How to cut a video

1. Choose your video. MP4, MOV and WebM files work when your browser can read them. 2. Find your times. Play the video in any player and note where the part you want begins and ends. 3. Type the Start. Use minutes and seconds, such as 0:05 or 1:23.5. Plain seconds work too, so 83 means 1:23. 4. Type the End, or leave it empty to keep everything from the start time to the end of the video. 5. Press Trim video. Play the result to check the cut. 6. Download the clip.

To remove only the beginning, set a Start and leave End empty. To remove only the ending, leave Start at 0:00 and set an End.

If the end comes before the start, or the start is past the end of the video, the tool says so in plain words instead of guessing what you meant.

How lossless trimming works

A compressed video stores full pictures, called keyframes, only every second or few seconds. The frames in between store just what changed. That is why most trimmers re-encode: a clip that starts between two keyframes cannot be decoded from its first frame alone.

This tool avoids re-encoding MP4 and MOV clips. It copies the video from the keyframe just before your start time, then marks the file so players begin exactly at your start time and skip the lead-in. Browsers, phones and most video editors follow that marker, so the clip plays from the frame you chose.

A few older apps ignore the marker and briefly show the frames before your start. If you see that, turn on Re-encode in Advanced. The clip is then rebuilt from scratch, starting exactly where you asked in every player, at a small cost in time and quality.

WebM files have no such marker, so a WebM cut that does not land on a keyframe is re-encoded automatically.

Trimming long videos and phone recordings

Because the video is copied rather than re-encoded, trimming is fast. Cutting two minutes out of an hour-long recording takes about as long as reading the file.

The new file is held in your device’s memory until you download it, so the length of the part you keep has a limit: up to 60 minutes on a computer and up to 15 minutes on a phone per run. The original can be longer. To split a long recording into several parts, trim it once per part.

iPhone videos are MOV files, usually with HEVC video. They trim losslessly in any up-to-date browser, because the video is copied rather than decoded. The preview plays only where the browser can play HEVC, such as Safari, but the downloaded file plays wherever the original did.

The trimmed file keeps the original resolution, frame rate, sound and orientation. Nothing about the picture changes except its length.

Trimming Videos Without Uploading Them

Your video never leaves your device. It is read from your device, cut in your browser and handed back as a new file. Nothing is uploaded or saved on our servers.

That also removes the slowest part of most online video cutters: the upload. A 2 GB phone recording can take many minutes to upload before a server-based trimmer even starts. Here, the trim starts as soon as you press the button.

Privacy matters with video in particular. Recordings of family, meetings, homes and screens often show more than you meant to share, and keeping them on your device is the simplest way to be sure they are not stored somewhere else.
