What this video speed changer does

This tool plays your whole video at a new speed and saves the result as a new file.

Pick one of eight speeds:

- Slower: 0.25×, 0.5× or 0.75×. A 10-second clip at 0.5× becomes 20 seconds. - Faster: 1.25×, 1.5×, 2×, 3× or 4×. A one-minute clip at 4× becomes 15 seconds.

Every frame of the video gets a new timestamp, and the picture is re-encoded with your browser’s own video encoder into an H.264 MP4, at a bitrate chosen to keep each frame close to the original’s quality. If a phone recorded the video sideways with an orientation setting, the turn is built into the new frames so it plays upright everywhere.

The result shows the speed, the old and new length, the frame rate of the new file and its size. The sound is removed at every speed other than 1×; the next sections explain why.

How to speed up or slow down a video

1. Choose your video. MP4 and MOV files from phones and cameras work, and so do WebM screen recordings. 2. Pick a speed. For a time-lapse feel, try 3× or 4×. To make a talk or tutorial snappier without it feeling rushed, try 1.25× or 1.5×. For slow motion, try 0.5×. 3. Press Change speed. The video is decoded, retimed and encoded again in your browser. Expect roughly real time or faster on a recent computer. 4. Play the result. Check the pace and the new length. 5. Download the MP4.

Why the sound is removed when the speed changes

Speeding sound up the simple way also raises its pitch: voices turn into chipmunks at 2× and into a low drone at 0.5×. Keeping the pitch natural while changing the speed needs a time-stretching step, which cuts the sound into tiny pieces and reassembles them.

We do not include one in this free tool. The good time-stretching libraries come under licenses this site does not use, and a rough one produces warbling that sounds worse than silence. So the tool is honest about it: at any speed other than 1×, the result has no sound, and the result card says so.

In practice this rarely matters. Time-lapses and slow-motion clips are almost always paired with new music, and most social feeds autoplay silently anyway. If you need the original sound as well, the free Video to Audio tool saves it as its own file for your editor.

Smooth fast playback and honest slow motion

Speeding up. A 30 fps video at 4× would play 120 frames every second, and a 60 fps video 240 — more than phones and most screens can show, and wasteful in file size. This tool keeps an even spread of frames at up to 60 per second, so fast clips play smoothly everywhere and the file stays reasonable.

Slowing down. Every real frame is kept and shown for longer. At 0.5×, a 30 fps video plays at 15 frames per second; at 0.25×, at 7.5. The motion is exactly what the camera caught, but low-frame-rate footage will look stepped when slowed a lot.

For the smoothest slow motion, start with video filmed at a high frame rate. Most phones offer a Slo-mo mode at 120 or 240 fps; slowing that footage to 0.25× still plays at 30 or 60 frames per second. This tool does not invent in-between frames, so the source frame rate decides how smooth the result can be.

Changing Speed on Your Device: Browser Support

Your video never leaves your device. It is decoded, retimed and encoded again on the page, then handed back as a download. Nothing is uploaded or saved on our servers.

What that means in practice:

- You need a browser that can encode video: Chrome, Edge or Firefox from the last couple of years, or Safari 16.4 or newer on a Mac, iPhone or iPad. If yours cannot, the tool says so. - MP4 with H.264 video reads everywhere. HEVC video, common in iPhone MOV files, needs a browser that can decode it, such as Safari. - Length limits follow your device’s memory, and they count the longer of the old and new length, since slow motion makes the file longer: up to 15 minutes per run on a phone, 60 minutes on a computer.
