Keep the sound between two typed times

Listen to the source and note the beginning and end of the passage you need. Enter those positions in Start and End. Plain seconds and minutes:seconds both work: 65 and 1:05 mean the same position, and 1:05.5 includes a fraction of a second.

A blank end keeps everything after the start. The range describes the audio to retain, so choosing a pause keeps that pause rather than deleting it. For an interview quote, leave enough room to hear the first and last words in full.

Ease into a clip and soften its ending

Open Advanced to change Fade: No fade, Fade in, Fade out or Fade in and out. The initial setting is No fade. When a fade is enabled, Fade length offers 0.5 s, 1 s, 2 s, 3 s or 5 s, starting at 1 s.

Fades change the volume near the cut boundaries. Each is limited to half the retained duration, so a short excerpt may have a shorter fade than requested. Listen to the result for clipped words or an abrupt musical ending. Applying a fade requires decoding the sound and writing new audio samples.

Understand when a trimmed recording keeps its encoded sound

The output choices are M4A or WAV, with M4A selected initially. An AAC source saved in the compact output format without fades can copy the encoded sound. This avoids another lossy encoding pass, although the boundaries follow audio frames rather than arbitrary samples. The result reports when the sound was not re-encoded.

Other sources or fades require fresh encoding for that compact export. The uncompressed alternative writes 16-bit samples and can be useful for further editing. An MP3 source is accepted, but there is no MP3 export here; trimming does not necessarily preserve the original file type.

Shorten long recordings within the browser’s audio limits

The browser reads the selected file locally. It does not upload the recording for this edit, but the page still needs to load its code and services. Support depends on the codec inside the file and the browser’s available audio features, not just the filename.

The retained range is limited to 15 minutes on mobile devices and 60 minutes on desktop, with additional memory checks. A fallback decoder reads the entire source and rejects files above 300 MiB, even when you only want a short excerpt. If the browser cannot encode the compact output or add its fades, try the uncompressed option suggested in the error. A smaller source or a computer may help with memory failures.

One retained passage is different from removing every pause

This trimmer creates one continuous excerpt. You can remove silence before the first useful word or after the last one by moving the boundaries yourself. It does not detect silence, remove a cough from the middle while joining the sides, or split a recording into many separate clips in one run.

Use a timeline editor for those multi-cut jobs. Here, the end must follow the start and the selection must exclude some of the source. Keeping the whole recording is rejected even when a fade is selected, so this is not a standalone effect for an otherwise unchanged track.

Prepare the excerpt before pairing it with a picture

Play the trimmed result and check its beginning, ending and reported length. For music under a video, compare that length with the scene it needs to accompany. Keep the source recording so you can choose a different passage later.
