What this audio converter does

This tool turns one audio file into another format, in your browser.

It reads the audio formats your browser can decode: MP3, WAV, OGG (Vorbis), M4A and AAC in every current browser, and FLAC and Opus in most of them.

It writes one of two formats:

- M4A (AAC) — compressed, small, and played by iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, music apps and most recent cars. Encoded at 96 kbps per channel, which is transparent for music and voice. - WAV — uncompressed 16-bit PCM. Large, but every audio editor, video editor and older device opens it.

The result has a player so you can listen before you download, plus the format, length, file size and sample rate. If the source is already AAC and you choose M4A, the sound is copied as it is and the result says Original, not re-encoded.

How to convert MP3 to M4A or WAV

1. Choose your file. It can come from a phone, a download folder or a recorder app. 2. Pick the format. M4A for listening, sharing and phone storage. WAV for an editor, a sampler or a device that only accepts older formats. 3. Press Convert audio. Most files finish in a few seconds; an hour-long recording takes up to a minute. 4. Listen to the result, check the size and download it.

M4A, WAV and why there is no MP3 option

Many people search for an "MP3 converter". This tool writes M4A and WAV only, and the honest reason is licensing: the MP3 encoders a website could include come under licenses this site does not use.

For almost every use, one of the two is a better fit anyway:

- Choose M4A to listen, share or store. AAC sounds as good as MP3 at a lower bitrate, and every modern phone and music app plays it. It is the format Apple and Android use for their own recordings. - Choose WAV to edit or when a device or upload form insists on an older format. Every audio program reads WAV, and nothing is compressed away.

If a service truly accepts only MP3, WAV is the safe input for its own converter, because every converter reads it and it has no compression of its own to stack on top.

Quality: what converting can and cannot do

Converting changes how the sound is stored, not how it sounds. It cannot add back detail that a compressed file already threw away.

- MP3 to WAV makes a file that is much larger and opens everywhere, but it sounds exactly like the MP3. That is still useful for editing, because edits and effects on a WAV do not add another round of compression. - MP3 or OGG to M4A adds one more round of compression. At the bitrate used here the change is very hard to hear, but it is not zero, so keep your original. - WAV or FLAC to M4A is the best case: a clean, full-quality source compressed once, into a small file. - M4A or AAC to M4A copies the sound as it is, with no change at all.

On browsers without audio decoding on the page, WAV conversion falls back to decoding the whole file at once, which may change its sample rate to the device’s, usually 48 kHz. The result card shows the rate.

Converting Audio on Your Device: Formats and Browsers

Your audio never leaves your device. The file is read by your browser, converted on the page with its own audio codecs and handed back as a download. Nothing is uploaded or saved on our servers, and there is no upload wait.

What that means in practice:

- WAV output works in every current browser. On older browsers the whole file is decoded at once, so there the limit is 300 MB. - M4A output needs a browser that can encode AAC unless the source is already AAC: recent Chrome, Edge and Safari can. If yours cannot, the tool says so and suggests WAV. - Length limits follow your device’s memory: up to 15 minutes per run on a phone, 60 minutes on a computer. - Unreadable files get a plain sentence, not a crash.
