MP3 to WAV makes an editing copy, not a new recording

Choose WAV when the destination asks for uncompressed audio. MP3 to WAV and M4A to WAV decode the existing sound and write a 16-bit working copy. They do not recover information removed when the source was compressed.

Keep the original recording if you have it. Converting a compressed copy back to WAV cannot recreate that original, and converting a higher-bit-depth source here reduces it to the supported export depth. Check the destination’s sample-rate requirements as well as its file extension.

MP3 to M4A and WAV to M4A use different starting points

M4A output contains AAC audio. Starting with WAV gives the encoder an uncompressed source; starting with MP3 means compressing audio that has already lost some detail. Use the highest-quality original available and compare the converted sound before replacing anything.

The initial format is M4A. Choosing M4A does not guarantee a smaller file than your source: the source encoding, duration and channel count matter. This converter has no bitrate slider and no MP3 export. If the receiving app requires MP3, use a converter that explicitly offers that output.

AAC inside M4A can avoid another compression pass

When the source track is already AAC and the output is M4A, the converter copies its encoded audio instead of compressing it again. The result’s Sound field reports “Original, not re-encoded” on that path. This describes the audio track, not a promise that the entire file is byte-for-byte identical.

The codec inside the file decides whether copying is possible. An M4A filename alone does not establish that its track is AAC. Other source codecs need decoding and AAC encoding, and those capabilities vary by browser.

Read a format error before retrying an audio conversion

Start the audio conversion with a MP3, M4A, WAV or OGG recording. FLAC and other audio files accepted by the picker still need a readable container and a decoder available to this browser. A selectable file is not a guarantee that conversion will succeed.

If M4A encoding is unavailable, try WAV. That route can use a second browser decoding method when the first one fails. The fallback reads the complete input and can resample it to the browser’s audio rate. Check the Sound field after conversion if your editor requires a particular rate.

Keep the recording local and leave room for its decoded sound

The browser reads your file and builds the converted audio on your device. It does not upload the recording for conversion. Audio stays on the device during conversion, although loading the converter and reporting processing errors still use the network.

The processing caps are 15 minutes and 1 GiB on devices classified as mobile, or 60 minutes and 4 GiB on desktop. The whole-file WAV fallback has a tighter 300 MiB input cap. These are ceilings, not guarantees: decoded audio and the finished file also need memory. Try a shorter recording or a computer if a large file fails.
