What a HEIC file is

HEIC is the photo format iPhones use by default. It stands for High Efficiency Image Container, a version of the HEIF standard. It stores a photo at similar visual quality to a JPG in a noticeably smaller file, which saves space on your phone.

The problem is support. Apple devices open HEIC without trouble, but many other places do not. Some Windows PCs need an extra extension from the Microsoft Store before they can show HEIC photos. Many websites, upload forms and older apps only accept JPG or PNG. Some photo printers and print services reject HEIC outright.

So a photo that looks fine on your iPhone can turn into an unopenable file the moment you send it to someone else. Converting it to JPG solves that, because JPG is supported almost everywhere.

How to convert HEIC to JPG, step by step

1. Get the HEIC file onto your device. On a Windows PC this is often a photo you copied from an iPhone, received by email or downloaded from cloud storage. On an iPhone, you can choose photos directly from your library.

2. Open the converter in any modern browser: Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.

3. Add the photo. Drop it onto the page or tap to choose it. The file stays on your device.

4. Choose the format. JPG is selected by default. Switch to PNG or WebP if you need them.

5. Press Convert. The photo is decoded and saved in the new format in your browser.

6. Download. The new file is saved to your device, ready to share, upload or edit.

There is nothing to install, and it works the same way on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone.

JPG, PNG or WebP: which should you choose?

JPG is the safe default. It opens on every computer and phone, and it is what most upload forms, email clients and print services expect. It is saved at high quality, so the result looks the same as the original to the eye. JPG files are usually larger than the HEIC they came from, because HEIC compresses more efficiently.

PNG is lossless: no further compression is applied after decoding. It is a good choice if you plan to edit the photo heavily or want an archive copy. The trade-off is file size; a PNG of a phone photo can be several times larger than the JPG.

WebP gives small files at good quality and is widely used on websites. It opens in modern browsers and most current apps, but some older software and upload forms still do not accept it.

Converting HEIC on Windows without an extension

Windows users are the people most often stuck with HEIC files. Photos arrive from an iPhone and show up as blank icons, or open with a message asking you to install an extension.
