PNG vs JPG: what actually changes

PNG and JPG store images in different ways. PNG is lossless: every pixel is kept exactly, and it can store transparency. That makes it a good fit for screenshots, logos, icons and graphics with sharp edges and flat color. The cost is size. A photo saved as PNG is often several times larger than the same photo as JPG.

JPG uses lossy compression designed for photographs. It discards fine detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which makes files much smaller. It has no transparency, and at low quality settings it can show blocky artifacts around text and hard edges.

So converting PNG to JPG is a trade. You give up exact pixels and transparency, and you get a file that is far easier to email, upload and store. For photos, that trade is almost always worth it. For screenshots full of small text, or logos that need a clear background, it often is not.

How to convert PNG to JPG, step by step

1. Open the converter in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. There is nothing to install.

2. Add your PNG. Drop it onto the page or tap to choose it. The file stays on your device. JPG, WebP, HEIC and AVIF images are accepted too.

3. Set the quality. The slider runs from 50 to 100%. The default, 92%, keeps most photos visually identical. Lower it if you need a smaller file.

4. Press Convert to JPG. The image is decoded and re-saved as a JPG in your browser, at the same width and height.

5. Download the JPG to your device.

Why transparent PNGs turn black elsewhere (and white here)

A common complaint after converting a logo or cutout: the transparent background has turned solid black. That happens because JPG has no transparency channel. When a converter throws the transparency away without filling it, the hidden color under the clear pixels is usually black, and that is what appears.

This converter fills transparent areas with white before saving the JPG. A logo on a clear background becomes a logo on white, which is what most people expect for documents, forms and printing. Semi-transparent edges, such as soft shadows or smoothed outlines, are blended onto white as well, so they look clean rather than dark.

Choosing a JPG quality setting

The quality slider controls how hard the JPG compresses. Higher numbers keep more detail and make bigger files; lower numbers make smaller files with more visible artifacts.

92% (default): a safe choice for photos you want to keep. The difference from the PNG is very hard to see.

80–90%: a good range for websites, email and social posts. Files shrink noticeably with little visible change.

60–75%: for strict upload limits. Check edges and text closely before you use the result.

100%: the least compression JPG allows. It is still lossy, and the file can end up larger than you expect, so it is rarely worth it.

When to keep PNG instead

Converting everything to JPG is not always the right move. Keep PNG when:

The image has transparency you need, such as a logo placed over different backgrounds or a product cutout for a website.

It is mostly text or flat color. Screenshots, diagrams, charts and interface mockups compress well as PNG and can look smudged as JPG, especially at lower quality.

You are still editing. Each time a JPG is edited and saved again, it loses a little more detail. Work in PNG and export a JPG at the end.

Pixel-exact output matters, as with pixel art, icons or images used for side-by-side comparisons.

Convert to JPG when the image is a photograph, when a form or website only accepts JPG, or when file size is the problem. A quick test works well: convert it, compare the two side by side, and keep whichever looks right at the size you need.
