Give a JPG a PNG working copy

Convert when an editor, slide deck or upload form needs a PNG file. The browser reads the JPG, draws the decoded picture and encodes a new PNG. Changing the filename alone does not perform that conversion.

PNG uses lossless compression for the exported picture. That is useful for a working copy you will edit later, but the conversion does not undo the JPEG compression already present. Soft lettering and blocky edges remain part of the picture.

Why a PNG copy can take more space than its JPG

JPG compression is designed to keep photographs compact by discarding some information. PNG stores the rendered picture without that lossy encoding step, so a photo often takes more bytes as PNG. The increase depends on the image; there is no fixed multiplier.

A white JPG background stays white in PNG

PNG can hold transparent pixels, but conversion does not decide which parts of a photograph to erase. A white rectangle, a colored backdrop or a checkerboard already baked into a JPG remains visible in the PNG.

Keep JPG dimensions without expecting sharper PNG detail

The output canvas uses the decoded image’s width and height. Conversion does not intentionally crop, enlarge or add a border. Check the result’s dimensions before putting it into a layout with exact size requirements.
