What changes when a JPG becomes a PNG

A JPG has already been through lossy compression. When the camera or app saved it, some fine detail was thrown away to keep the file small. Converting to PNG decodes those pixels and stores them exactly, using lossless compression.

That has two consequences. First, the PNG looks the same as the JPG. Any softness, color banding or blocky artifacts in the JPG are copied faithfully into the PNG. Converting cannot bring back detail that JPG compression removed.

Second, the PNG will not get any worse. You can open it, edit it and save it again as many times as you like without adding a new round of compression each time. That is the main practical reason to convert: the PNG becomes a stable working copy.

The pixel dimensions do not change. A 3000 × 2000 JPG becomes a 3000 × 2000 PNG, with nothing cropped or resized along the way.

How to convert JPG to PNG, step by step

1. Open the converter in any modern browser on Windows, Mac, Android or iPhone. Nothing needs to be installed.

2. Add your JPG. Drop it onto the page or tap to choose it. The file stays on your device. PNG, WebP, HEIC and AVIF images are accepted too, so you can also turn an iPhone photo straight into a PNG.

Why the PNG is bigger than the JPG

Expect the PNG to be several times larger than the JPG it came from, sometimes much more for detailed photos. That is normal and not a sign that anything went wrong.

JPG is built for photographs. It saves space by discarding fine detail and by describing smooth color changes approximately. PNG keeps every pixel value exactly, and its compression is most effective on large areas of flat color, which photos rarely have. Grass, skin, sky noise and textures give PNG very little to compress.

For graphics the gap is smaller. A logo, chart or screenshot with a few solid colors can end up close to the JPG size as a PNG, and it often looks cleaner too.

If the size is a problem, ask whether PNG is really required. Many forms that say “image” accept JPG. If a site demands PNG and also has a size limit, a smaller-dimension image is the practical fix; the free Image Compressor can resize it first.

Does converting make the background transparent?

No, and this is the most common misunderstanding about JPG to PNG. PNG can store transparency, but converting does not create any. A JPG has no transparent pixels, so the PNG has none either. A white background in the JPG is still a solid white background in the PNG.

Good reasons to convert JPG to PNG

Editing in several rounds. If you will crop, annotate or retouch an image and save it repeatedly, a PNG working copy avoids stacking JPG compression on each save. Export a JPG at the end if you need a small file.

Forms and platforms that require PNG. Some upload forms, marketplaces, game and app stores, and design templates accept PNG only.

Adding text or graphics. Captions, arrows and diagrams have sharp edges. Saving the finished image as PNG keeps those edges crisp, where JPG would blur them slightly.

Consistency. A folder or project where every asset is PNG is simpler to manage in some design and development tools.

Poor reasons include hoping the PNG will look sharper or have more detail. It will not. If the photo is too small or soft, that is a job for upscaling, not conversion.
