What this image splitter does

This tool cuts one image into equal rectangular tiles. You choose the layout, written as columns × rows:

- 2 × 1 — two tiles side by side. - 3 × 1 Carousel — three tiles side by side, the default. - 3 × 2 — two rows of three. - 3 × 3 Instagram grid — three rows of three. - 2 × 2 — four equal quarters.

The tiles are cut edge to edge with no gaps, so they join back into the original picture when seen together. Each tile is saved as its own file, and the files are numbered in posting order, so you know which one to post first.

Before you download, a contact sheet shows every tile in place with thin gaps, so you can check nothing important falls on a seam. The tool also shows how many tiles it made.

Everything happens in your browser. Your image never leaves your device.

How to split an image into a 3×3 Instagram grid

A profile grid shows your newest post at the top left. So to build a nine-tile picture, you post the tiles backwards: the bottom-right tile first and the top-left tile last.

The file names do that thinking for you.

1. Choose your image. A square image fills the grid exactly. Other shapes are split into equal tiles of the same shape. 2. Pick 3 × 3 Instagram grid. 3. Press Split image and check the preview. 4. Download the tiles. 5. Post file 01 first, then 02, and so on up to 09.

When the last tile is up, the full picture appears across the top three rows of your profile.

Post all nine close together. Anything you post in between shifts the grid by one tile. Also note that profile grids now show tiles as tall rectangles, so the edges of each square tile may be trimmed a little in the grid view.

How to make a seamless panorama carousel

A carousel post lets people swipe sideways through up to twenty images. Split a wide photo into equal slides and the picture continues from one slide to the next as they swipe.

1. Choose a wide photo, such as a landscape, a beach or a group shot. 2. Pick 3 × 1 Carousel for three slides, or 2 × 1 for two. 3. Press Split image and check the seams in the preview. Try to keep faces off the cut lines. 4. Download the tiles. 5. Create one post and add the tiles in number order.

For a clean fit, your image should be about three times as wide as it is tall for a 3 × 1 carousel of square slides, or two times as wide for 2 × 1. For 4:5 portrait slides, crop the image to 12:5 for three slides first.

Picking an image that splits well

Not every image looks good cut into pieces. A few checks help.

Watch the seams. Faces, text and logos look odd when a cut line runs through them. The contact sheet preview shows the gaps, so check it before you post.

Give each tile something to see. A tile that is all sky or all wall looks like a mistake on its own. Wide scenes with detail spread across the frame work well.

Start big. Each tile gets only a part of the pixels. A 3000-pixel-wide image split into three gives three 1000-pixel tiles, which is about what feeds display. A small image split into nine tiles can look soft.

Match the grid to the shape. A square image suits 3 × 3 and 2 × 2. A wide image suits 3 × 1 and 2 × 1. A 3:2 image suits 3 × 2.

If the image is not the right shape, crop it first with the free image cropper.

Splitting Grids Locally Before You Post

Your image never leaves your device. The splitter uses your browser's own canvas to cut the tiles. The image is read from your device, split in memory, and every tile is handed back as a download. Nothing is uploaded or saved on our servers.

That matters for unreleased work. A campaign image, a product launch or a new illustration should not sit on a stranger's server before your post goes live. Many online grid makers upload the file to do the cutting. This one does not.
