What this border tool does

This tool draws a frame around your photo. You control four things.

Border sets the width, from 0 to 20% of the photo's shorter side. Measuring it that way keeps the look the same on any size of photo. A 5% border on a phone snap looks like a 5% border on a large camera file.

Color sets the frame color. Pick white, off-white, black or any color from the picker.

Rounded corners rounds the corners of the photo inside the frame, from square to a soft pill-like curve. The outer corners of the frame follow the same curve.

Canvas shape pads the whole image out to 1:1, 4:5 or 9:16. The photo is placed inside, whole, and the border fills the extra space. Nothing is cropped.

How to post a full photo on Instagram without cropping

Feed posts must fit between a 1.91:1 landscape and a 4:5 portrait. A tall phone photo or a wide panorama gets cropped to fit. Often the crop cuts off exactly what you wanted to show.

The fix is padding. Instead of cutting the photo down to the shape, you add space around it until the whole thing is the right shape.

1. Choose your photo. 2. Open Advanced and set Canvas shape to 4:5 Portrait for the most screen space, or 1:1 Square for a tidy grid. 3. Pick a border color. White suits most feeds. Black suits moody or night photos. 4. Set the border width. Even at 0%, the padding still fills the gap. 5. Press Add border and download.

For a story, choose 9:16 Story. A landscape photo then sits in the middle of a tall colored canvas.

Choosing a border width and color

A border changes how a photo reads. A few rules of thumb help.

Thin, 2–4%. A subtle edge that separates the photo from the app's background. Good for busy feeds.

Medium, 5–8%. The classic white gallery border. It gives the photo room and makes it look printed. The default is 5%.

Wide, 10–20%. A bold, poster-like frame. It works for minimal photos with one clear subject.

For color, white and off-white feel clean and bright. Black makes colors look richer and suits night shots. A color pulled from the photo, such as the sky or a jacket, ties the frame to the picture. Try the free color palette tool to find the exact shade.

If you post a series, keep the width and color the same across every post. The grid then looks planned rather than random.

Rounded corners and card-style images

Rounded corners soften a photo and make it look like a card or an app tile. Set Rounded corners in Advanced from 0% (square) up to 50%.

Low values, around 3–8%, give a gentle curve that works for product photos, slides and blog images. Higher values make a strong pill or badge shape. At 50%, a square photo becomes close to a circle.

The curve applies to the photo inside the frame, and the outer edge of the border follows it, so the frame and the photo stay in step.
