Turn photographic edges and shadows into drawn marks

The filter compares brightness with a softened version of the photo to form pencil-like edges. It adds shading in dark areas and a patterned grain that resembles marks on paper. The positions of people and objects follow the original composition.

Use it for a portrait card, a pet keepsake or a study of light and shade. It has no understanding of which lines an artist would leave out. Hair, foliage and background texture can all become visible marks, so a clear subject gives you less clutter to manage.

Balance pencil texture against the amount of shading

The Style choices are Pencil, Charcoal or Color pencil, starting with Pencil. The monochrome treatments range from lighter graphite-like marks to heavier dark shading. The colored treatment mixes the source colors into the drawing with a softer tint.

Start Detail at 60 and compare a small adjustment in either direction. Increasing it strengthens the line treatment; reducing it can make busy texture less dominant. The control does not selectively erase a background or remove every shadow.

A tonal sketch is different from a coloring outline

A sketch reference can help you study the shapes in a photo before drawing. This effect retains tonal shading and paper-like texture, however, so it does not promise the empty, enclosed shapes of a coloring page. Lowering the detail still leaves some shading.

For tracing, check the important contours and simplify unwanted marks in a drawing editor. The result is a picture made of pixels, not editable paths for a cutting machine. Use the separate image vectorizer when vector tracing is the next job.

Check faint facial lines and crowded backgrounds

The filter works from brightness differences already present in the picture. A blurred face cannot supply a sharp eyelash outline, and similar tones can blend into weak marks. Choose a focused source with visible separation between the features you want to keep.

If a sketch looks too dense, reduce the detail and inspect the subject again. Built-in smoothing reduces some fine noise, but the drawn texture is intentional. A tighter source crop can reduce distractions; this tool has no brush for choosing individual lines to keep.

Inspect the saved sketch before putting it on paper

The sketch keeps the working image dimensions after the browser applies its canvas limits. A very large original may therefore become smaller. Inspect the saved file at the intended print size, especially around small eyes, lettering and fine hair. There is no resolution increase in this effect.

The output is a flattened raster picture, and its file type can differ from the source. Existing transparent areas remain transparent, but pale paper-like areas are still visible pixels. A sketch of an opaque photo does not automatically become a transparent line drawing.

Keep the photo local or choose a separate art transformation

The browser reads the selected image and calculates this sketch on your device. No photo upload is part of that processing path. Calculating the sketch locally still requires the page code to load and may involve website service requests.
