What this photo to sketch tool does

This tool turns a photo into something that looks drawn with a pencil. It uses a classic darkroom-style technique rather than AI.

In short: the photo is turned to grayscale, a blurred negative of it is made, and the two are blended so that flat areas turn white and edges turn into dark, pencil-like lines. Shading appears where the photo had soft changes in tone.

You choose a style:

- Pencil — fine gray lines on white, like a graphite sketch. - Charcoal — darker, heavier strokes with deeper shadows. - Color pencil — the sketch lines blended with soft, muted tints of the original colors.

The Detail slider, from 0 to 100, sets how much fine texture shows. Low values keep the main outlines. High values bring out hair, fabric and leaves.

How to turn a photo into a pencil sketch

1. Choose a photo. A clear subject in good light works well: a portrait, a pet, a building, a still life. 2. Pick a style. Start with Pencil for a classic look. 3. Set the detail. The default is 60. For a clean line drawing, try 30–40. For a detailed study with texture, try 70–90. 4. Press Make sketch. 5. Compare by dragging the slider. If the lines are too faint, raise the detail or switch to Charcoal. If there is too much noise, lower the detail. 6. Download the sketch.

For a printed card or frame, start with the largest photo you have. The sketch keeps the full size of your original, so a large photo gives crisp lines on paper.

Pencil, charcoal or color pencil?

Pencil gives light, clean lines with gentle shading. It suits portraits, architecture and anything where clarity matters. It also prints well on cards.

Charcoal pushes the darks further and makes lines heavier. It suits dramatic portraits, animals with strong fur texture, and photos that look a little flat in Pencil. On very busy photos it can get heavy, so lower the detail.

Color pencil keeps a soft hint of the original colors inside the sketch. It suits flowers, landscapes, food and children's photos, where color is part of the charm. It feels warmer and less formal than the other two.

Getting cleaner sketch lines

The sketch follows the edges and tones already in your photo. A few adjustments make a big difference.

Light matters most. Even, bright light gives clean lines. A photo taken in shade or at night tends to give faint, patchy lines. Try the free photo enhancer first if a photo is dark.

Simple backgrounds help. Busy backgrounds turn into busy scribbles. Blur or remove the background first if the subject gets lost.

Sharp beats soft. A blurry photo has soft edges, and soft edges give weak lines. Focused photos sketch better.

Use detail to control noise. High detail brings out texture but also grain from a phone camera in low light. If the sketch looks speckled, lower the detail.

Crop first. A tight crop on the subject gives larger, clearer lines than a wide shot where the subject is small.
