Soften a complete picture for a backdrop

Blur changes the detail across the frame while leaving its broad colors and shapes recognizable at gentler settings. Try it on a photo you want to place behind a slide title, poster caption or website heading. Add the lettering afterward in your layout editor so the words remain sharp.

This is a whole-picture effect with no selection brush. It does not separate a person from the scene. For a portrait with a sharp subject and soft surroundings, use the separate Background Blur tool.

Choose even softness, sideways streaks or a central rush

The Blur choices are Soft, Motion or Zoom. The default, Soft, blends nearby pixels in both directions for an out-of-focus appearance. The horizontal effect stretches detail sideways across the picture. The zoom effect spreads detail along lines from the middle, making the outer parts look as though they are rushing past.

There is no angle control for the horizontal streaks, and the zoom point stays in the center. Circular spin blur is a different effect and is not offered here. A face away from the center can smear with the rest of the scene.

Judge blur strength against the whole frame

Amount starts at 40%. Treat that as a starting point and compare the result at its intended display size. A backdrop may need more softness than an action picture where the subject still needs to read clearly.

The strength is not a radius in pixels. The even and horizontal effects calculate their reach from the shorter side of the image; the zoom effect uses a proportional enlargement. Small slider changes near the low end are deliberately gentle. On a tiny image, adjacent settings can round to the same blur radius.

Check softened cutout edges and the saved picture

When the source has transparency, the blur weights colors by their visibility before mixing them. This prevents hidden colors in fully transparent pixels from darkening the softened edge. The blur also spreads transparency, so a cutout boundary becomes softer rather than staying fixed.

The tool encodes a new image after processing. The saved file can have a different type or byte size from the source. Working dimensions stay the same through the blur itself, but a large original may first be reduced to fit the browser’s canvas limits. Inspect the exported image before putting it into a design.

Blur the local file while keeping a sharp original

The browser reads the selected photo, calculates the blur and creates the result on your device. No image upload is part of that effect. The website still needs its code to load and may make service requests or report processing errors.

Keep the original if you may want the sharp version later. The saved result contains the blurred pixels, with no blur slider that another image viewer can turn back down. Blending pixels also does not prove that sensitive lettering or a person is unrecognizable; this effect is not a secure redaction method.

Decide whether to soften the scene or replace it

Whole-picture blur keeps the scene you started with and changes its sharpness. It cannot replace a cluttered room with a studio setting or protect a subject from every streak.
